Mr Christian Schmid, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, was presented with the Melvin Jones Award at the Lions National Convention 2016 in recognition of his excellent organization of this same event. This is the highest possible honor for Lions Club members and can only be awarded by the incumbent international Lions President.
It was a very special occasion for the animal that features on Zurich’s coat of arms when, on April 22 & 23, 2016, the Lions National Convention 2016 for the Lions Clubs belonging to the so-called Multi-District 102 and the Leos – the youth members of the Lions Club – from Switzerland and Liechtenstein was held at the Kongresshaus in Zurich. The motto of «The Lions meet the Lion of Zurich» could not have been more fitting in view of Zurich’s heraldic animal. Incidentally, this international convention will not be held in Zurich again for another 20 years.
Awaiting the approximately 800 Lions members and their companions was a varied program of activities. Particularly memorable were the Lions Night on the Friday evening, which was moderated by Swiss TV presenter Kurt Aeschbacher, and the charity auction, which comprised prizes that otherwise could not be purchased for money. The proceeds of the auction were donated to the association, «Kinder mit seltenen Krankheiten», which helps children with rare diseases. In his capacity as Association President, Prof. Thierry Carrel, Director of the University Clinic for Cardiovascular Engineering at the Inselspital in Bern and himself a Lions member, was presented with a check for CHF 30,000. Zurich City Councilor Andres Türler and State Councilor Ernst Stocker also honored the Lions with a visit. According to the Organizing Committee, the number of participants was higher than in previous years, which underscored the attractiveness of both the program and the destination Zurich.
Those accompanying the delegates were treated to highly enjoyable ancillary programs in the heart of the City on the Limmat, including literary city tours, a visit to the Beyer Clock and Watch Museum and a tour of the Villa Patumbah.
When asked how Zürich Tourism’s Convention Bureau had assisted him in successfully staging this event in Zurich, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Christian Schmid, replied:
«The team from the Convention Bureau actively supported us in various areas, including our bid to host the Convention in Zurich, which was presented at the previous year’s event in Lugano. We were also able to customize one of Zürich Tourism’s existing promotional videos and show our colleagues that «Zurich is smartening itself up ready to welcome Lions Club members in April 2016». In addition, we were delighted with the advertising material, such as giveaways and city maps, that they provided. What’s more, special tariffs were negotiated at selected Zurich hotels, which was greatly appreciated by our Lions colleagues. Zürich Tourism is a reliable partner.»
