The next two years will see some promising gems brought onto Zurich’s diverse meeting and incentive market with this wide range of new hotels and venues.
Two Convention Centers by 2021
The most notable new opening in fall 2020 will be the major project “The Circle”: Zurich Airport will soon be home to a convention center with a capacity of up to 1,500 guests. With 12 restaurants, a range of shops and plenty of green outdoor spaces, “The Circle” will be Zurich’s new “place to be,” alongside the city center. It will also feature two new hotels, Hyatt Place and Hyatt Regency, with a combined total of 550 rooms.
The Zurich Convention Center (or “Kongresshaus”), with its spectacular view of the lake and the Alps, will be reopening in spring 2021 following a complete renovation. With around 5,300 square meters of space in more than 20 rooms and foyers, and a capacity of up to 4,500 people, it will be perfect for all manner of events.
New Hotels Opening in 2020
La Réserve Eden au Lac Zurich, a hotel located on Zurich’s Utoquai, will reopen its doors at the beginning of 2020 following an extensive renovation. The 40 rooms and suites, restaurant and bar were all redesigned by Philippe Starck, who managed to restore a great deal of the hotel’s original character.
From March 2020, there will be another Leonardo Hotel in Zurich – and it’ll be right by the airport. The Leonardo Hotel Zurich Airport will have 116 rooms, as well as two function rooms for conferences and events, and co-working spaces in the lobby for individuals or groups.
Hotel Felix, the Sorell Hotel St. Peter (located in Zurich’s Old Town), and the easyHotel Zurich Limmatplatz will all be opening their doors to guests from mid-2020.
In fall 2020, Marriott International will be opening a new Moxy Hotel, complete with 86 rooms, in Rapperswil-Jona. It will be the first hotel by this trendy new brand to open in the Zurich area.
The Bellerive au Lac on Zurich’s Utoquai will be undergoing a complete renovation, reopening in the fourth quarter of 2020 as Switzerland’s first Ameron Boutique Hotel. The hotel is set to feature 60 rooms and suites, a restaurant with various entertainment options, and a range of conference and event spaces.
The Intercityhotel Zurich Airport is scheduled to open in 2020, with 250 rooms and a conference space measuring around 450 square meters.
New Event Venues Opening in 2020
The unique premises of the former gourmet restaurant in the Sorell Hotel Rigiblick will now serve as a top event venue, available to book from the beginning of 2020. Vreni Giger will stay on to host guests at this versatile venue.
The Gasthaus Albisgütli will be opening at the beginning of 2020 after an extensive renovation, and it promises to be an absolute feast for the senses, with a restaurant, lounge and function hall with a capacity for up to 1,200 people, as well as other great spaces for smaller events.
Halle 550, a former industrial building located right by Oerlikon station in the north of Zurich, is expected to open in fall 2020 as an event venue with a modular and customizable design.
New Attractions Opening in 2020
The WOW Museum of optical illusions will be opening in the heart of the city in spring 2020, covering around 380 square meters on three stories. As an event venue, it has capacity for up to 100 people. Visitors can explore and discuss issues such as perception, illusion, tolerance, equality and differing perspectives, in the form of company events or private tours.
Zoo Zurich will be opening its third key project, “Lewa Savanne,” as planned at Easter 2020. This project will see giraffes finally return to Zurich, while the Dahomey cattle pasture will provide event space for over 1,000 guests.
The Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg will also open its doors in spring 2020, boasting a multimedia and interactive exhibition, a research facility and chocolate-making demonstrations. Other highlights include the world’s largest Lindt Chocolate Shop, the first Lindt Café in Switzerland, a Lindt Chocolateria for chocolate courses, and the world’s largest chocolate fountain, which is eight meters tall.
“Knies Zauberhut” will be a multi-functional event arena within Knies children’s zoo in Rapperswil, opening in fall 2020.
New Hotels Opening in 2021
In the first quarter of 2021, another hotel will be opening in the 2,000-watt Greencity area, which is located in Wollishofen in the south of the city. The Meininger Hotel Greencity will have around 170 rooms, with a total of 600 beds. Alongside the traditional single and double rooms, it will also offer multi-bed rooms and dormitories.
A new Ibis Hotel, complete with 260 rooms, is set to open near Zurich main station in summer 2021. This venue will have six stories featuring a range of conference facilities, hotel rooms and apartments, all with a three-star rating. There are plans to build a rooftop bar on the top floor.
The Niu Hotel, which boasts 131 rooms, will be opening in fall 2021 in the “Glasi” district in Bülach, which is in the north of Zurich.
At the end of 2021, a new Ruby Hotel with 208 rooms will be opening in a charming listed building known as the “ABC Kino,” located right next to Zurich main station.
New Event Venues Opening in 2021
At the beginning of 2021, the Kunsthaus Zurich will be opening its extension, where a new function hall with great acoustics will provide an additional versatile event space for 50 to 500 guests.
The “Fischerstube” restaurant, located in the Zürichhorn area, will be opening in the new building in mid-2021. There will be around 290 seats available in the restaurant, on the lake terrace, and on the veranda. The smaller “Fischerhütte” venue, which can be used for events and seminars, can accommodate a good 30 guests, with 200 seats available in the beer garden.
